Stop Dangerous Big-Rig Drivers!

Daniel McGuire imageOn July 10, 2014, the McGuire family needlessly lost their son Daniel in a horrific accident which occurred on California State Highway 17. This tragedy occurred because numerous companies failed to take steps to ensure that an unskilled trucker driving a faulty big rig not be allowed to traverse over a treacherous mountainous highway.

Daniel and other motorists traveling on Highway 17 that fateful day had no clue that a tractor/ double trailer configuration with faulty braking mechanisms carrying nearly 50 thousand pounds of top soil was being driven by a newly licensed and unskilled truck driver.

Stand with us in support for Senate Bill (SB) 158,which will make California roads safer by:implementing a new federal rule on entry-level commercial driver training, as well as adding additional behind-the-wheel requirements to ensure commercial vehicle drivers acquire the skills necessary to safely operate commercial vehicles.

In 2010, there were 10,062 at fault truck and commercial vehicle collisions reported in California, of which 2,432 involved an injury, and 68 resulted in a fatality.

This country needs at least 30,000 more truck drivers to meet current demand, and the industry estimates it must hire 100,000 drivers every year for the next 10 years if it hopes to keep up with retirements, turnover and industry growth.

With the large number of new truck drivers placing motorists at risk, it is vital that we take action to make sure our highways are made safer for our families. Current state law only requires that a commercial driver pass a CDL knowledge (written) and skills (driving) tests, allowing any new driver to become licensed in less than two weeks.

Let our lawmakers know that you support of  SB 158, a necessary action to make our roads and highways safe.
